#YanegirlSmallTalks: El Efecto Greta

How do you practice kindness at work?

Yes. These are a few of my flowers. You can compliment them if you want.

Last month, the headline of this article caught my attention (yes, I also fall for the dramatic click bait sometimes). It was the story of a woman abducted in Austria, and she empathized with her captor through a random act of kindness. Complimenting his orchids started the conversation that ultimately saved her.

Around the same time, I read this post in the Instagram account of Humans of New York (I never miss an opportunity to say that this is one of my favorite social communities of all times). In the post, the subject reflected on how the lack of empathy and love towards him while growing up led him to develop an aggressive personality and desire to hurt others. Until he found someone who cared.

I know there is a lot of wrong in both stories, and I know there are more complex situations that cannot be solved easily within these people’s minds and life choices; but beyond that, I was more interested in the common lesson that both cases can provide: kindness works and it’s good for everyone involved.

My train of thoughts after reflecting on these led me to the following ideas that I’d like to share with you:

The “good” we don’t give

We all have our problems and we’ve all experienced hard situations in our lives that led us to be the way we are today. But some of us are luckier than others, and I guess we’ve got more to give more.

Some people never had that someone to teach them better. Some people never find a kind person that with one gesture or words can inspire them to step out their holes of internal misery. Therefore, their lives never change, and they never get to experience hope.

It is difficult, I know. And the more we get, the less we are open to share with others face to face, because with more having comes a bigger fear of losing, of being robbed, betrayed or hurt. We are scared of smiling to the homeless, to keep giving to the beggar that keeps on asking, we don’t want to talk to those who look too weird… We develop some kind of fear to do well.

More dangerously, we forget that kindness is a habit that needs to be exercised, for our own good and for the good of others.

Kindness at work

But practicing this doesn’t require you to become the new Mother Theresa neither Gandhi. It is about being courteous even with those you don’t know, being thankful to those who serve you, showing appreciation for the ones around you… and little by little making a difference in your personal and professional interactions.

Early in my career, I learned from a bad boss the importance of that Spanish saying: “Se atrapan mas moscas con miel que con hiel”. The translation would be something like “You can catch more flies with honey than with gall”.

Bad leaders think the opposite, but the truth is that kindness (sweet as honey), drives more and better results than shouting, being pretentious or prepotent (bitter as gall). Those bosses that lead by fear might get the work done but never get the best out of their teams. Subordinates would either fear them or hate them.

Meanwhile, good leaders can be assertive and kind at the same time, and get their teams to work towards common goals. They even get them do more because they want to help, because they feel appreciated and thankful. They will ultimately get things done because they want to, not only because they have to.

Enabling confidence in your team

As another example, kindness can also give comfort and confidence to shier team members, encouraging them to excel.

Recently, I participated in a workshop that required a lot of brainstorming. The first rule we received from the workshop facilitators was that we were not allowed to criticize others’ ideas. Everyone should be listened to, and all ideas were welcomed.

During the first few exercises, only the same people dared to speak. But by the second half of the workshop, the more introverts ones felt more and more confident to participate, and the outcome was great. They couldn’t stop coming up with great things and there was a change in their attitude that was even reflected in their body language.

I hope this gives you something to think of. To ask yourself how do you experience or practice kindness at work?

Para cultivar la auto-confianza

Nunca me he considerado bella, mucho menos sexy.

Bridge of Spies Got Me Crying!

Tom Hanks interpreta a James B. Donovan en Bridge of Spies.

#BreakTheInternet...or not?

Hint: Do you recognize Homer’s mouth?

Knowing that this post is out of time, I decided to write it anyway. I usually don’t go over topics that seem like clear desperate calls for attention to me -because writing about it is granting that attention-, but I could make an interesting point out of this one.

I’m talking about KimKa’s Butt (with capital B, since it has kind of a personality on its own now), and Paper Magazine’s attempt to break the internet. Now allow me to walk you through my mental process while reading the news:

1) I thought: “Oh, so now she’s totally naked! I wonder why it doesn’t really surprises me.

2) I wondered what the reasoning behind the magazine cover was. Since this is not a “gentlemen’s” magazine I wanted to believe that there could be much more behind it than just the fact of creating “breaking news” with KimKa’s Butt. After all, there should be an article supporting the pictures, no?

3) There was an article and I read it. And I found it clever, although pitiful.

4) I also found hilarious memes withKimKa’s Butt, but that's not the point.

Now let me share my conclusions with you all.

1 – Apparently, seeing KimKa’s totally naked not only didn’t surprise me, it didn’t surprise many people. Like, this was the next thing she had left to do. You sort of would expect it from her; therefore, seeing her wasn’t as impacting as it would have been if it was someone else. Let’s take “Gisele Bundchen” as an example. Even though Gisele is a VS top model always appearing in her underwear, she has never even showed her boobs and she keeps an apparently very normal personal life with her husband and kids, usually away from scandals. KimKa’s on the other hand, with the “lovely” support of her soulmate ‘Ye, is always all over the place. I wouldn’t doubt if their next move is to appear naked together.

So, conclusion #1: To create real outstanding impact, you better surprise.

2 – Paper Magazine said their goal was to “Break the internet”. Although a little cynic, the whole thing was interesting as well. I don’t know if I’m the only one who felt like there was something unsaid between the lines, but my interpretation of the situation and the article shifted more towards them not trying to “break the internet” really, but kind of criticizing a society who tries-so-hard every day to do it. And there is people like KimKa’s who likes the attention, being used sometimes somehow by others. People who would do anything. And people who would love to be like her. Because “there’s people and there’s people”, says a Spanish refrain.

Conclusion #2: Don’t take anything for granted when reading the news, you would be surprised.

Of course, as a journalist I always knew this. But sometimes I also get carried away and dragged by what everyone is talking about and forget to do my own research.

3- Surprisingly, the interview was empty but interesting from a communication stand point. If you read it thoroughly, you’ll note that KimKa didn’t say anything really. She didn’t answer the questions widely. She didn’t disclose any interesting information. It made me wonder if she’s really empty headed or she’s so smart that she knows how to play it. Surely we see her life and her “real self” in her show, but it has always been said that her mom is the master mind behind the whole family success. What’s reality? We’ll never know. “But you know that she is very, very famous. Some would say that’s all you need to know”. I know how it is to have an interview with no real answers and how creative a journalist has to get in those cases.

Conclusion #3: Amanda Fortini, the author, was very creative. I applaud her for that. And we are all playing along: Kim posing, Amanda building on her scarce answers, you reading, me criticizing…

Cellphone Nation!

I don't need to give much explanation to the logic behind these pictures. I'd rather say:

<<These days there's much more going 'in' our worlds than is going 'out'>>

You gotta love these boots!

The Book Thief!

I just finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak…

***A QUOTE FROM THE BOOK THIEF***
<<I wanted to tell the book thief many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she didn’t already know? I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race- that rarely I do ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant>>

It made me cry on the train.

It made me want to see the movie.

It made me think of the story of Job. Of how would it feel to lose it all.

It made me remember another of my favorite books, Angela’s Ashes, and how stories from the perspective of a child carry more forgiveness and less sorrow and regret.

It made me feel sorry for countries where bombings are happening right now.

It made me admire the amazing job of the photographer from Humans of NewYork.

It made me think of reconstructive surgery and plastic surgery. And surgeons that volunteer their work in the first case.

It made me desire to become an author that can provoke so much on people’s minds.

It made me pray.

It made me hope for new beginnings.

Me hizo rezar.

Me hizo tener esperanza en nuevos comienzos.

I love my curls just because!

About a month and a half ago, I started a new hashtag on my Instagram account @yanegirl, called #InspiringCurlsTuesday. As the name says it, each Tuesday I post a picture of a girl with curly hair whose look I like.

Throughout this process of cutting my hair and letting it grow just curly as it is, I keep looking for sources of inspiration because it’s not an easy process and as it grows, it feels much more like an experiment because I have no idea of how it’s going to turn (I could write about this but it would be a totally different post).

Weather changes, product trials, blow dry or air dry… every month there’s a new variable that comes into play, dismissing what seemed to work the month before.

The thing is that some of my friends have started to collaborate with my hashtag by sending me pictures or tagging me in pics that they believe would be good for the hashtag. This is really nice because I feel that bit by bit more people would embrace it.

Last week my friend Mylen, sent me the main pic in this post. I saved it for next Tuesday. Then my friend Sofia also tagged me on it. When I saw it, I thought –“Ok, this could be my next blogpost”.

I just wanted to say that I didn’t cut my hair because I wanted “to rebel against years of oppression of blowers and dryers”, or because “I wanted to honor my African roots”, or because “straight hair look is a stereotype imposed by our parents and bosses”, neither because “hair salons are hell”… or any other reasons that other girls claim to embrace. I totally respect them, this shouldn’t sound like I’m making an argument against anyone.

I just want to say that I cut my hair ‘because I’m too much of a practical person. I didn’t even wanted to seem “cool” or whatsoever. Sorry to disappoint you, but I didn’t got so deep about this. I just don’t tend to complicate myself with meaningless things. I knew I wasn’t going to spend hours straightening my own hair once I moved to NY, neither pay 20-30 dollars for someone else to do it, so the best option was to keep it curly.

My hair in April, 2013.

I did liked my hair before, I enjoyed it as much as I’m enjoying my curls now. I used to do all kinds of experiments with it. And I believe that beauty salons in the DR are so affordable, that is a luxury we all should take advantage of, if we like it.

I don’t know if I’ll go back to my former twice a week salon routine, once I go back home. Keeping up with curly hair is not as easy as people paint it and can be a bit frustrating some time (just start watching tutorials on YouTube and you’ll see), so only time would tell for me. At this moment, this is what works. It didn’t work for me before because I had a different lifestyle that wouldn’t allow me to dedicate a full hour to wash and style my hair at 5am in the morning before going to work.

For me is just hair. The most versatile part of our body. One which mistakes you can always fix easily, with no pain. And it grows! So if you like your hair straight, keep it. If you want curly hair, go for it! The key is that you love it and love yourself either way. Whatever makes you feel beautiful and comfortable, is what you should have.

My hair now.

Feed junkie

Whatsapp. Facebook. Twitter. Instagram. Pinterest. LinkedIn. Personal E-mail. School E-mail. Work E-mail. Blog.

The listed above are the main networks I’m engaged to every day. During the past months, I’ve been working intensively with managing multiple accounts, and this has kind of given me the sensation of being packed of it.

It’s funny because social media supposedly gives us insights of other people’s life. These channels are supposed to makes us feel part of their best moments, closer to their feelings, especially from those who are way.

But what’s really happening is that, lately, I’m not really paying much attention to what anyone posts on social media but me. Sounds selfish, I know. But this is probably one of the most sincere analyses I’ve written lately.

Am I becoming a “feed junkie”?

I ask myself this kind of modern-existential questions every once in a while.

The fact is that with the imposed fake necessity of keeping the pace of my updates and the rest of the time that I expend “living” the real life, I ain’t got much time left (or desire) to keep in track with everyone else’s lives. I’m in, see what people have to say about what I posted, and I’m out. That’s it.

Then someone asks me “did you see the pictures I posted about my trip”? And you probably know what the answer is. If I'm not directly involved in it, I might not. (If I wasn’t tagged there, forget about it).

Only when I’m waiting on a line or for the bus to arrive, I get into the stories of the rest of the world, but this might be no more that 10 minutes. And by my amounts of shared content, people think I’m connected all the time, but the truth is I’m more disconnected than ever.

The interesting paradox here is that by being so into “social”, I’ve become an “antisocial”.

Is this happening to you as well?

If we reach a point where the answer of this last question is mostly yes, there will come the evolution, and the networks would have to be reinvented again to drag us back in into their game.

Isn't it funny how social media changes the creative game?

“Isn’t if funny how money changes the situation?” –a song says. But the thing is that, for the fashion industry specially, social media is changing the whole creative process when it comes to working on campaigns.

Oscar De La Renta launched their fall ad campaign on their Instagram @OscarPRGirl this year

Right now, the creative team not only needs to make tangible an abstract inspirational concept for a collection. It also needs to be attached to a wise and attractive ad campaign that will be later showcased in different formats including, of course, social media.

The whole campaign won’t be only about visual impact anymore. Its interpretation must be communicated as a whole set of experiences that will be showcased through these new channels available.

This means that nowadays each season’s campaign’s meeting shall contemplate how the idea would work on pictures, how it would work on a 140 characters message, how it would fit a 1:1 Instagram square, on which Pinterest board it would be placed, how the whole story can be told on a 3 minute video on YouTube and the third party channels of the influencers recruited for the brand.

This means, the complete planning of performing all these things involves more than just a concept, a model, a stylist, a make-up artist, a photographer and a location, as in the old days.

Fashion in particular, is an industry which sales are driven by each brand’s visual contents. Some are definitely doing it better than others on this race. They’re seeing the whole picture together and the consumers are seeing it as well.

Michelle Williams by Peter Lindberg for Louis Vuitton

Talking about being all over? Louis Vuitton makes it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Google+ and even Foursquare. Followed by their own App. All of these clearly prompted on their main site.

Chanel on the other hand, is lagging on the list of brand’s with a good social media presence, despite their intents of engaging people with the brand’s history, with their “Inside Chanel”, video series on YouTube.

Some might say: “Maybe is just that Chanel true ladies (large buyers) are women who are probably not “losing time” on social networks”. But guess what? Maybe their daughters, grand-daughters and nieces are. And when it comes about getting their first high fashion piece from “wealthy grandma”, some network influence might lead their preference.

Oscar de la Renta’s house may teach them all a little lesson about it. Their @OscarPRGirl is more than an account name. Is an insider with true personality, communicating with the world from the bowels of the brand. They even choose to launch their fall ad campaign on Instagram, before any other traditional media. Approaching with these strategies a younger circle of customers who have responded happily to the messages of a brand that specially suits women beyond their 35’s.

So get your team's minds set or die trying.

It's a New Year!

Gwen Steffani and the right to repeat!

Gwen Steffani repite ropa.

Yaris Cedano, modelo altruista!

Sandro Guzmán, Yaris Cedano y Milly Reuter.
