Victorias’s Secret: Less is More to Face Competition.

If you are a young woman using social media in urban zones of the United States, you’ve probably seen Victoria’s Secret’s new campaign showcased constantly across Facebook. As part of the target, I’ve noticed them.

I came across with one of the ads, it caught my attention, crossed the information with my own customer experience, and started to see this campaign from a marketing student stand point.

One of the reasons why I don’t buy that much at VS, prices aside, is because I feel they’re too much about push-up and padding. Thankfully, to be modest, I don’t need excessive padding; is not comfortable for me to wear a push-up every day the whole day; neither to boost my bust “up to three cups”; thus, on their ads, I passed.

Until now.

Is not that Victoria’s Secret had no options for those who wanted more relaxed support options for their “pair”, I’m just pointing the fact that this was not the strongest message in their advertisement.

Again, thinking as a marketer-to-be, if VS is now claiming that less is more I can only think of two reasons:
  • a)     Cutting production cost by using less material. (We’ve seen stuff like this in other kinds of products)
  • b)     Trying to gain that consumer that wants a more laid back bra like me.

Let’s go with “b”, since it’s the answer that intrigues me the most.

According to model Lily Aldridge in the campaign launch video, this new #LessIsMore concept is inspired by fashion icons like Alexa Chung, who embodies the concept of casual-effortless style.

But again, why claim that “Less is More” now and not before? That’s the question. I believe is not just a matter of trends. If you are among the target mentioned before, you’ve probably came across at least once with campaigns from other brands like True&Co.

Their concept is very appealing. You fill a test where you state what you like and don’t like on a bra, you submit it (I did), they pair it with their products, show you some options according to your taste (and they have really cute ones), you pick five among the suggested styles and they send it to your house. If you don’t like the once you try them on, you can return them without paying or only return the ones you don’t want to keep.

Other brands like ThirdLove, have even developed an App that helps you find the perfect bra for you.

Clever! With this approach they not only have your data (to keep sending you offers), but also have very valuable market research on customers’ preferences and underwear dilemmas.

Then, that niche of the market that Victoria’s Secret was not so crazy about have started to buy from another brand that can be as sexy and luxurious, perhaps more comfortable. And not only that, they are also bringing more friends along, ‘cause you know girls talk.

But that’s just my humble perception.
